What is transaction tagging?
Transaction tagging lets you label individual transactions with custom or one of Crowded’s recommended accounting tags — like event names, Form 990 categories, or funding sources. Tags make it easier to filter, report on, and understand where your organization's money is going, beyond standard account categories.
Who can create and manage tags?
Any admin can create, edit, and delete tags from the web platform. Members can view tags applied to their transactions, but cannot add or change them.
How do I tag a transaction?
- Log into Crowded and navigate to the Transactions tab
- Select a transaction you’d like to tag, and under the “Tag” column click “assign”
- Select on one of the preloaded or suggested tags, or type in a new tag and click enter to create a new tag.
- Click “Assign tag” to apply the tag to the transaction
How do I remove a tag from a transaction?
- Select the transaction that you want to remove from the tag from
- Click on the transaction, and the transaction window will open
- Scroll to where it says “Tags” and click the “x” next to the transactions you want to remove.
Can I apply tags in bulk?
Yes. Navigate to the to the tag inner page, either by clicking on the tag in the transaction feed, or select the tag from the list of tags. Once you are on the tag inner page, click “Add transactions”. There, you can search or filter through your transactions to find other ones to add or remove from the tag.
Can I rename or delete a tag?
Yes. Navigate to the to the tag inner page, either by clicking on the tag in the transaction feed, or select the tag from the list of tags. Once you are on the tag inner page, click the pencil icon to edit the name of the tag, or click “Delete tag.” Note: deleting a tag removes it from all transactions it was applied to. This action cannot be undone.
Is there a limit to how many tags I can create?
There's no limit on the number of tags, but we recommend keeping your tag list focused and consistent so reporting stays concise. A good rule of thumb: if a tag hasn't been used in 6+ months, consider archiving it.
What are the preloaded tags and why are they there?
Crowded has preset tags for nonprofits with the common accounting tags, as well as the Form 990 required reporting categories. These set tags set nonprofits up for the standard reporting practices and will keep the cash amounts clear when it comes time for year-end reporting.
